Olecranon Bursitis Ultrasound Sydney

Olecranon bursitis is a condition that causes inflammation or swelling in a fluid-filled sac around the elbow. Bursitis can also occur in other areas of the body where bursae—small fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, tendons, and muscles—become irritated or inflamed.

Other common types of bursitis that may require ultrasound imaging include:

• Prepatellar Bursitis (Knee Bursitis) – Inflammation of the bursa in front of the kneecap, often called housemaid’s knee.
• Trochanteric Bursitis (Hip Bursitis) – Swelling of the bursa on the outer hip, causing pain and discomfort.
• Subacromial Bursitis (Shoulder Bursitis) – Inflammation in the shoulder bursa, leading to pain and restricted movement.
• Retrocalcaneal Bursitis (Heel Bursitis) – Occurs at the back of the heel, commonly linked to overuse or tight footwear.
• Ischial Bursitis (Sitting Bone Bursitis) – Affects the bursa near the sit bones, often causing pain when sitting for extended periods.

We can evaluate this condition through ultrasound which use no radiation and instead utilise high-frequency sound waves to image the full elbow for our doctors to evaluate the severity of the bursal inflammation.

The bursitis scan does not require any invasive imaging as the ultrasound probe is run across the outside of the elbow during the examination.
